Philanthropy: LOVE of Mankind
In honor of Valentine’s Day, the Chronicle of Philanthropy published an opinion piece on the importance of love in philanthropy. In it, the authors (Jennifer and Peter Buffett, who co-founded of the NoVo Foundation) implore philanthropists to remember that giving starts in the heart.
Metrics, data and ROI are part of “doing business” in the philanthropic sector now. They are important—but they are not everything.
Philanthropy means “love of mankind.” Emphasizing numbers over people, or impact over instinct dilutes the definition and driving force of charitable giving. These things must complement each other—not compete.
The Buffett’s op-ed is a good reminder to all of us working to advance in philanthropy that our hearts are the origin of the journey.
