Frequently Asked Questions

Account Opening: What do I need in order to open my DAF?

Opening a donor-advised fund is easy. Here is the information you will need to have on hand:

  • Contact information – name, phone number, email and mailing address, and year of birth of every individual you wish to assign to an advisory role for this account.
  • Optional: Legacy Plan details, including the name and contact information of any individual you wish to assign as an individual successor or any charitable organization you wish to assign as a charitable beneficiary.
Account Opening: Can I open a DAF now and fund it later?

Yes. Once you open your donor-advised fund, you can choose to make the initial contribution at a later time. Please note that you will not be able to recommend grants until your DAF is funded.

For Advisors: Can a financial advisor manage a DAF for a client?

A DAF’s primary advisor may allow their financial advisor to help manage the DAF. Similar to secondary advisors, financial advisors may be given read-only access (in which they can only review the details of the DAF and its activities), or full access (in which they may recommend grants and investment allocations on behalf of the primary/joint advisors). A DAF may have only one financial advisor named.

Investing: How do I grow my DAF over time?

NPT helps donors achieve their philanthropic goals by offering both thematic impact portfolios and private impact investing solutions. You may select from NPT’s thematic impact portfolios when you complete the donor application in the section where you recommend an investment strategy for your DAF. You may also recommend a new investment strategy at any time and can easily allocate DAF assets into NPT’s impact portfolios.

Contributions: How do I contribute assets to my DAF?

For most assets, the first step is to submit a Contribution Agreement. You may complete this process online at nptgivingpoint.org by heading to the Make a Contribution page.

Transfer instructions for each asset type are included on the online contribution agreement as well as on the How to Make a Contribution document. You can also learn more in our Contribution Guide.
